CLUB REBUILD

Dear members, some great news today. The club was granted resource consent by the Christchurch City Council to rebuild our club house. Given the complexities of building in the earthquake zone, the tsunami area, the 200 year flood plain and the beach environment, this is great news. Big thanks to Nigel Cox (good club man), Matt Gutsell (the architect supreme) and Johno from PLANZ for getting this over the line!

Once more we ask, if you have no filled out a letter of support for the rebuild of the clubhouse, please do so. The more letters we get, the better our case for funding is.

BURGER NIGHT

Following the seasons AGM, the club facilities will be opened for a social catch up. Part of this is the Burger Joint caravan (usually out the front) has offered to cater for the night. This should be a good night so all members are welcome to come along and have a coke and a burger. Please check the menu here and then mail Rohan (rohanmcn@hotmail.com) telling him what you fancy to eat. We ask members do this so that Caroline the burger lady knows what she is in for! That's Saturday the 29th of July, 6.00pm start.

CLUB REBUILD SUPPORT

As part of the clubs rebuild plans, we are collecting letters of support from club members, local residents and generally anyone who thinks this will be great for the South Brighton area. At the bottom of the rebuild page is a email form we are asking supporters to fill out and submit. All you do is enter your name, address (we need this for verification), copy the provided text into the message box (you don't even have to think) and boom! Submit.

We ask all members to spread the word and lets get the support rolling in! Lastly, we hate spam as much as you so be assured your details will not sold, shared, lent out or anything like that.

ANDREI MARTIN

The club committee and surf club members offers its condolences and thoughts to the Martin family on the passing of father and husband Andrei after a short battle with illness. The Martin family are locals in the South Brighton area and are members in the junior surf section.  We know everyone will be thinking of them at this time.

MURRAY MARKS

The club committee and members of the surf club offer its deepest sympathy and condolences to the Marks family on the passing of Murray "Muzza" Marks. Murray had a heart attack 4 weeks ago and passed away last Saturday night. He was a humble man who served 30 years in various roles in the police force and the community will be much the poorer for his passing.

TSUNAMI EVACUATION REVIEW

Many of you who live locally will have noted the difficulties associated with the "area evacuation" after the Kaikoura quakes. For anyone who is interested the council commissioned review of the whole thing is available here. The club encourages all members to have a read of the review and provide feedback via the channels available. Given the issues mentioned in the report effect so many members, its worth a read.

THANKS FOR THE ART AUCTION

On behalf of the club, we would like to thank everyone who showed up to the South Brighton SLSC Art Auction last night and who dug deep into their wallets to support the clubs junior program. There was a fantastic response from some very talented local residents and club members themselves which made the night the success that it was. The numbers are just getting calculated now, but its safe to say the junior surf section will be rolling on some new gear next season! Lastly, a huge thanks to Dave Gentry and his fantastic team of organisers who got this over the line. Your efforts were exceptional!

Tsunami Siren Testing

For residents and members along the Pacific coast, Civil Defence will be testing the tsunami warning sirens this Sunday (2nd of April) at 11am. The sirens are located along the coast from Taylors Mistake to Brooklands. The sirens will sound for approximately three minutes, and are designed to be heard within a few blocks of the coast.

The sirens are tested twice a year to coincide with the start and finish of daylight savings. Further information on the tsunami evacuation zone, the tsunami sirens and preparedness information can be found here.

CLUB HOUSE REBUILD

The proposed plans for the new club house are about to hit the council for resource consent. The current plans are now available on the new page on this website called "club house rebuild" for people to download and look at.

We are also having an information night on Thursday the 30th of March 7.9pm at the clubhouse for members and local residents who want to come down, see the plans and ask any questions that they may have. Its a chance to hear about the new building, its design, its usage, why things are the way they are etc. Again, members and any local residents are welcome to come along.

The 2017 Summer Season

Well that's it everyone, the sun is setting earlier, the water is getting colder, patrols are done and Nationals are over. The club committee would like to thank everyone who helped in some way with the running of the club this season. Patrolling, towing gear, managing, coaching, cooking sausages, the list goes on.

The end of the summer season does not these days mean the end of the surf club season though. We have prize giving inbound this weekend, art auctions going on, building stuff happening and training for pool champs will be forthcoming! Keep your eyes and ears to the ground for more information but for this week, thanks!
