THANKS FOR THE ART AUCTION

On behalf of the club, we would like to thank everyone who showed up to the South Brighton SLSC Art Auction last night and who dug deep into their wallets to support the clubs junior program. There was a fantastic response from some very talented local residents and club members themselves which made the night the success that it was. The numbers are just getting calculated now, but its safe to say the junior surf section will be rolling on some new gear next season! Lastly, a huge thanks to Dave Gentry and his fantastic team of organisers who got this over the line. Your efforts were exceptional!

Tsunami Siren Testing

For residents and members along the Pacific coast, Civil Defence will be testing the tsunami warning sirens this Sunday (2nd of April) at 11am. The sirens are located along the coast from Taylors Mistake to Brooklands. The sirens will sound for approximately three minutes, and are designed to be heard within a few blocks of the coast.

The sirens are tested twice a year to coincide with the start and finish of daylight savings. Further information on the tsunami evacuation zone, the tsunami sirens and preparedness information can be found here.

CLUB HOUSE REBUILD

The proposed plans for the new club house are about to hit the council for resource consent. The current plans are now available on the new page on this website called "club house rebuild" for people to download and look at.

We are also having an information night on Thursday the 30th of March 7.9pm at the clubhouse for members and local residents who want to come down, see the plans and ask any questions that they may have. Its a chance to hear about the new building, its design, its usage, why things are the way they are etc. Again, members and any local residents are welcome to come along.

The 2017 Summer Season

Well that's it everyone, the sun is setting earlier, the water is getting colder, patrols are done and Nationals are over. The club committee would like to thank everyone who helped in some way with the running of the club this season. Patrolling, towing gear, managing, coaching, cooking sausages, the list goes on.

The end of the summer season does not these days mean the end of the surf club season though. We have prize giving inbound this weekend, art auctions going on, building stuff happening and training for pool champs will be forthcoming! Keep your eyes and ears to the ground for more information but for this week, thanks!

RATA FOUNDATION

The club would like to acknowledge the help of the Rata Foundation here in Christchurch in delivering the Junior Surf Holiday program over Xmas and into 2017. Their support has provided us with the means to provide a coach and resources for our younger members. This kind of support is important in helping us do what we do, so big ups to the Rata Foundation!

Assistance Required

The next month will be a busy tie for the club. We are hosting the Junior Canterbury champs, the Student Army are visiting South Brighton, the local Southern Regional champs are on and of course, we have the National champs at New Brighton. With all this on, we will need some assistance so if you can help with the following, the club will be grateful:

  • We are looking for people to help assist deliver the Junior Canterbury champs. Although SLSNZ have not yet asked for help, we will need help with the BBQ, setting up arena's, judging and all the other things a competition will need. Any help will be welcomed.
  • When the Southern Regional Champs are on, its likely that most competitors will be down the beach at New Brighton racing so any one who can offer an hour or two covering patrols will be welcomed.

Its coming to the end of summer, so lets end on a high note!

NZ SLSC Champs - Masters Competition

As most of you will be aware, this season the SLSNZ National Life Saving champs will be held at New Brighton beach. Entries have now opened for the Masters events (held on Thursday the 16th of March). If your interested in competing please let the club know. As far as we can tell, the only requirement for entry is that you hold a surf bronze and its a flat entry fee so there will be no restrictions on events you can do (other than your skill!).

Weekend Patrols

It would appear that this weekend, the rostered patrols are going to be short patrolling members on Saturday (31st of December) and Sunday (1st of January). Anyone with some spare time to kill and can patrol either day (even for a couple of hours), can you please let Quinny (021 997 846), Scott Martlew (022 081 7493) or Mark Drabble (027 309 2425) know. Any help will be welcome, especially with the weather forecast to be hot.

Thanks,

The club committee.

Xmas

The club committee wishes all members a merry xmas and best wishes for the new year. We also hope at some stage summer will start! The regional guard service has started at the club and will run through until the end of January 2017. Members are welcome to use the gear and facilities in this time but please remember:

  • Junior Surf members have to show the life guards a 200M badge before using bigger boards and ask the lifeguards if they can go out.
  • Younger junior surf members are allowed to use boogie boards under the supervision of parents and please tell the lifeguards your using the gear.
  • Anyone using club gear (no matter how old) has to wear a high vis vest. The lifeguards can ask you to leave the water if your not wearing one.

Happy holidays!

Club House Open

Following this week's seismic activity, the clubhouse has been checked for further damage and is now cleared for use. There are two new cracks that have opened in the boat shed masonry but these are superficial and do not impact the structural integrity of the building.

So, patrols will start this weekend, the refresher day scheduled for tomorrow at lunch is on and Junior Surf Sunday morning is cleared for take off.

Whilst we are talking about the club house, this Saturday at 2.00pm (after the refresher) we are calling on members to come down to the club and swing a broom and man a mop as we give the club a clean for summer. All help is welcome. We will be sweeping the gear sheds, bleach bombing the changing rooms, cleaning the windows etc....
