Club House Update

Following this mornings quake, the club executive has made the decision to close the surf club building for any use until further notice. We will be arranging an engineering inspection and sign off before we open it again for normal use. We expect that this will take a few days to organise and its hoped this can be done by the weekend.

At this stage, there will no senior training tonight at the beach or the harbour. The junior surf training program is also cancelled for this week (Tuesday and Thursday night).

The executive thanks everyone for their co operation and understanding. Closing the building is a nuisance but our members safety and reassurance is the most important thing for us to consider. Thanks again, any questions please contact Rohan (President) on 022 674 7021.

Refresher Day / Defib Training

This year the club will be running an "en mass' patrol refresher day on Saturday the 19th of November at 12.00pm. We ask that all members who need to refresh their award come down to the club and get the refresh process sorted out early in the season. The club will also provide a BBQ lunch as reward for your ocean swim.

As part of this day we will also be running a training session from St. John around using our new heart defib unit. This session will be open to any member (regardless of whether your qualified as a life guard or not) who wishes to learn about using this valuable piece of first aid equipment. So, make a note in the calendar, Saturday the 19th of November, 12.00pm.

This is an opportunity to come along, register for the upcoming season, order togs and high vis vests, ask questions, get answers and generally prepare for the new season! We look forward to seeing both old and new faces lining up for the 2016/2017 Junior Surf season!

CERT Foundation Support

The CERT Gaming Foundation has kindly allocated some funds for the club to purchase a heart defib and a spinal board. This will allow us to keep providing a high level of primary first aid to not just the beach users, but the local community. The defib especially is welcome, as it will be the only one in the South Brighton area. We say thanks again to the CERT Foundation and Bruce Inwood for their ongoing support of the club and the community!

INFINITY FOUNDATION

The Infinity Foundation has very kindly negotiated a support package with SLSNZ that see's the club receiving new patrol flags, a patrol board from Sonic and a tablet to make entering our patrol stats easier. The club is grateful for this support so thanks a lot to the Infinity Foundation for their assistance. This gear is something else we don't have to worry about finding money for and something that will make our job of delivering life guard services easier. So once more, thanks Infinity!

VINTAGE CAR CLUB FUNDRAISER

The first of the clubs annual fundraising events has rolled around again. On the nights of the 7th and 8th of October we require volunteers to provide security to the annual vintage car club gathering at McLean's Island. We usually do two shifts, 6.00pm to 12.00am and 12.00am until 6.00am. Yes you miss some sleep but you help line the coffers of the club with cash. We are asking now for volunteers to step up and help. You do get shelter and the toasted sandwiches are pretty good! Please let Rohan or Benny know if you can help. These events are pretty important to us now, its hard to ask funders to give us money for a new club if we are not prepared to help ourselves.

Hi all, the Southern Trust Foundation have helped us out with some purchasing adjustable surf skis this year. These skis are used by our developing lifeguards and puts skis on the beach that anyone can pick up in a hurry and paddle for rescues etc, and of course helping us maintain and grow fit skillful lifeguards to provide a service to the local community. Thanks Southern Trust for supporting the club and helping the community!

NZCT Summer Sports Program 2016

The club coach James Feathers has been working hard on the upcoming summer sports program. Thanks to the ongoing support of NZCT who help us fund this program, the new season will start again on Monday the 26th of September. Training for the first few weeks will take place at the clubs flat water base at Naval Point Yacht club over the hill in Lyttelton. The base has facilities for land and water work, storage for the gear and the club house even has showers that work so no excuses for not showing up. James looks forward to seeing everyone hitting the grindstone ready for the new season and once more we say thanks to NZCT for their ongoing help in providing the members this service!
